How does the 3d Laser Engraving work?
The 3D laser engraving process uses a computer guided laser to precisely engrave 3D images within optically perfect laser crystal. Initial efforts produced 3D images engraved inside a solid piece of optically perfect laser crystal without damaging the crystal block surface. Refinements have added 2D images (pictures of people or things), text, 3D heads and other 3D objects. Additional advancements created our latest offerings, 2D sub-surface laser engraving is a unique merger of 3D and 2D laser engraving which produces the highest quality laser engraved image with unmatched quality and clarity.
Q. 1 What is a Lead Crystal?
Lead crystal is lead glass that has been hand or machine cut with facets. Lead oxide added to the molten glass gives lead crystal a much higher index of refraction than normal glass, and consequently much greater "sparkle" by increasing specular reflection and the range of angles of total internal reflection. Ordinary glass has a refractive index of n=1.5, whereas the addition of lead produces a range up to 1.7. The presence of lead also makes the glass softer and possible to make precise cuts deeper keeping accuracy in design.
Lead Crystal historically also known as flint glass due to the original silica source, contains a minimum of 24% lead oxide for color, clarity, sparkle and brilliance. Crystal can consist of up to 35% lead, at which point it has the most sparkle. The higher lead content also makes it much more difficult to form crystal during manufacturing. More lead content, the heavier the piece. The lead also make the crystal softer and more conducive to cutting. Swarovski crystal contains approximately 32% lead to maximize refraction.
Q. 2 What is Optic Crystal?
Optic Crystal is 100% Lead Free and extremely hard. Barium oxide is used principally in optical and crystal glass instead of lime or red lead. Glass, which contains barium, is lighter than lead crystal but gives comparable brilliance due to its high refractive index. Optical Crystal subjected to tremendous pressure to ensure no bubbles, flow lines or other distortions.
Crystal without lead is not any less valuable than full lead crystal particularly when it is thick and heavy and finely designed. In fact, clear uncut crystal has to be particularly fine quality because the flaws can not be hidden by the cuts.
Q. 3 What "Ingredients" Glass contains?
Glass is made using three different minerals:
Q. 4 Differentiate between natural crystals and artificial crystals?
Natural crystals are found in the earth, where they were formed millions of years ago. They come in a variety of mineral compositions, colors, and shapes. Artificial crystals are human-made, and can also be called leaded glass. While they are not known to have much healing properties they can have a positive effect on the energy balance in a space.
Q. 5 How we get colour glass / crystals?
To make coloured glass, different pigments are added to the glass-mass. For example, to produce green, copper oxide is added to the mixture. To produce blue, cobalt oxide is added. As well, it is possible to produce black, brown, red, orange, yellow and purple glass, in a myriad of shades.Q. 6 How we can distinguish genuine Crystal with ordinary glass?
The main difference between glass and crystal is the lead content. Glass is composed of sodium and potassium. Crystal is also composed of sodium, but in addition, it contains silicone, and has a lead content of 24-35%. The lead makes the glass heavier and, most importantly; the lead changes the refraction index of the item, which makes it appear brighter and cleaner.
In short :
Q. 7 There are flow lines and air bubbles inside? Is this genuine crystal?
A. When you hold a glass up to strong light you can see crystal often have small air bubbles. They may also have socalled flow lines and chill marks, which are indentations on the surface of the glass. These are actually not flaws in the glass, but inevitable in a mouth blown or hand blown glass - signs telling you that the glass is hand made. Even fine and precious crystals may have air bubbles, chill marks and flow lines. This is a good sign that your piece was more than likely hand crafted as preferred by some conservative and ethnic customers.
Q. 8 What is internal / subsurface Laser engraving ?
Laser engraving is the practice of using an intense lasers beams to engrave or mark an object. The technique does not involve tool bits which contact the engraving surface and wear out. This is considered an advantage over alternative engraving technologies where bit heads have to be replaced regularly. The laser machine controls the direction, intensity, speed of movement, and spread of the laser beam aimed at the surface.
Q. 9 What is External engraving, etching or sandblasting?
Sandblasting or etching is a generic term for the process of smoothing, shaping and cleaning a hard surface by forcing solid particles across that surface at high speeds.
In glass etching, abrasive is blasted at the glass lightly to turn the glass semi-opaque. This ‘whiting’ or ‘snowing’ of the glass can be used to great effect to produce words or images. By adjusting the speed of the sandblasting and the angle from which the abrasive is being launched, differing shades can be created, allowing for some true works of art.
Q. 10 Why crystal decanters / wine glasses are costly?
On a microscopic level, optic crystal glasses and stemware have a coarser and more porous surface than ordinary stemware and glasses. The coarser surface helps to release and enhance the special aromas of wines and spirits. That’s why crystal stemware and glasses are so highly valued by most wine drinkers. However, a crystal glass is softer and more delicate on the surface than an ordinary glass. Therefore it’s easily scratched.Q. 12 Is crystal dangerous for the health? If we use crystal wine glasses and decanters, is it unsafe?
No, infact presence of crystal aura in environment spreads electromagnetic vibrations and positive energy that surrounds the mind & body.
We, at Crystal Mirage use 100% lead free optic crystal especially for making decanters, wine glasses & crystal containers. So no question of harmfulness though it is beneficial and 100% safe.
Only extensive use of lead crystal decanters and glassware to store fortified wines, whisky and eatables for long time is harmful and have statistical evidence to lead poisoning.
Q. 11 What is Crystal Poisoning?
A. Significant amounts of lead can migrate from lead crystal containers into beverages stored in them. Lead crystal typically contains 24–35 percent lead oxide. Citrus juices and infant formula leach lead from crystal just as effectively as alcoholic beverages. Several companies do make lead crystal baby bottles and it is suspected they may present a health danger to infants.
Q. 12 Does Crystal has healing property?
A. Yes, Lead crystal is a reminder of the four elements, ultimate components of life i.e earth, fire, wind & water. Crystal aura in environment spreads electromagnetic vibrations and positive energy that surrounds the mind & body. It is believed that crystal heals and balances bio-energy. It can also convert negative energy to positive. Therefore, we recommend you to keep / hang our Crystal ornaments on your windows or on your car to bring all the reflections of Sunlight in and the positive energy.
Q. 13 How we should clean spiritual collections of crystals?
Following are the few conventional methods, which have crystal cleaning/clearing properties:
Lemon : This has a purifying effect and, on a practical level, cuts grease.
Q. 14 How can I meditate with crystals?
There are many ways. You can simply sit with a crystal in your hand and make feeling its energy part of the meditation. You can place crystals on body areas, which correspond to chakra points. You can also meditate with crystals to which you are drawn, either holding them or, again, placing them on your body.
Q. 15 Which file format needed for 3D engraving?
We need 3ds max, obj, dxf, stl etc file format for 3 dimensional model engraving.
Q. 16 Which file format needed for 2D photo/text engraving?
The CorelDraw cdr, Illustrator’s ai, eps, png for the text and high resolution* jpg, tif, tga, pdf, bmp format for 2 dimensional text or photo engraving.
*High resolution: your file should be at least three times the final engraved size at 72dpi. For example, if the engraved size of your logo if 1"x1" then your jpg file should be at least 216 x 216 pixels. (216=72*1"*3). For best results your logo should have clean, sharp edges viewed at normal size.
Q. 17 What type of soft material needed for scale modeling and miniature and how long it may takes to complete the job?
Preferably for scale modeling, we need soft copy of high resolution photographs from all the dimensions i.e. front, back, left, right, top and close-ups for fine detailing and also floor plan in CDR or AutoCAD DWG/DXF format. And the duration for any scale model depends upon the design and detailing in the structure.
Q. 18 What is concept of 3D Scanning?
The application of 3D capturors is the process of using digital cameras and pre-designed light to capture the information of shape and appearance of real objects. This process provides a simple way of acquiring 3D models of unparalleled details of objects and realizes 3D image modeling by scanning them from the real world.
While a normal camera collects color information about surfaces within its field of view, 3D cameras collect distance information about surfaces within its field of view. The "picture" produced by a 3D camera describes the distance to a surface at each point in the picture.
Q. 19 How long will it take to make a customised 3D cyrstal?
It depends on how many point cloud any 3D/2D image has and ambient temperature around the laser machine. Because if diode pumping the laser systems gets heated; the engraving time also increases. With 200,000 points of 3D/2D image it will take about 2-3 minutes to finish one crystal (60,000/90,000 points/min) with portable laser engraving machine at ambient temperature less than 22oC.
Q. 20 What should be the distance between object and 3D Camera for scanning?
Distance from 3D camera to object should not be less than 5 feet (1.5 meter) and more than 6 feet. And there should not be any reflecting light on the camera lens and object to be scanned.
Caring for Crystal :
As crystal is "soft & delicate" because of the lead content. It will be important for you to know how to care for your crystal as even dust can act as an abrasive and cause scratches.
Remember, most damage happens when cleaning or moving pieces. Therefore, you have to be careful each time you clean a piece. When moving objects, always carry one object or one part of an object at a time. It is best to place your hands around the body of the object rather than using an existing handle, rim, or spout for support. In general, it is not a good idea to routinely wash the pieces. Each time a piece is handled for cleaning there is a greater risk of breakage through accidents and mishandling. It is better to protect pieces from soiling and dust in the first place, rather than washing them too often.
To maintain the beauty and power of your crystals, always keep them away from dust and oily residues. Fingerprints will disappear when you use a small amount of glass cleaner with a soft, lint free cloth or wash your fine crystal and glassware by hand in moderately warm water with a mild lemon detergent and 1/4 cup ammonia (to prevent spotting). Rinse in clean water and air dry on a rack.
